WHAT WE STRIVE FOR

Mission

The Congo-Canada Charity Foundation (CCCF) is a community based Non-Profit organization operating in Winnipeg, for over 5 years, which offers educational support and mentorship to new youth immigrants. We are made up of local educators, students, volunteers and community members who have a desire to improve children’s lives and strengthen the community. We focus primarily on math, science and language arts (both in French and English) which helps bridge the academic gap that so often holds back many newcomers. Computer literacy is also a key area of focus due to the rapid growth of computer skills required in today’s world. By running an after school program from October to June and the summer school program from July to August, we've been able to not only provide unique learning experiences but also keep many of these at risk youth in a safe environment. The CCCF is one of four members of the Newcomer Youth Educational Support Services Coalition (NYESS) which is completed by: The Eritrean Community of Winnipeg, Emmanuel Mission and The Sierra Leone Refugee Resettlement, Inc. Together we form a wider community based initiative in Winnipeg that has an even greater outreach that’s capable of serving many more and diverse newcomers to the city.

The students are at the heart of the program. The CCCF helps provide summer education for new youth immigrants so that they have a better chance to succeed. These are children who have come to Winnipeg with varied educational backgrounds. Too often, immigrant youth fall behind academically during the summer. This program allows them to stay engaged in education, and to have a good time as well. The makeup of the students in the program ranges from kindergarten all the way up to grade 12. For the summer school program, students are grouped based on grade level whereas the after school program needs are met on a one-on-one individual basis. For many of us it's hard to imagine what it would be like moving half way around the world to a place where they don't speak the same language and where the culture is completely different. And then add to the difficulties of adapting to a new society, the troubles that many students face entering the school system. For many of these newcomers, they missed crucial years of schooling while they awaited in refugee camps. What we try to do is bridge the gap that many of these students face by helping them prepare and even catch up to where they should be. By focusing on the essential math, science and reading skills it gives these students a great foundation to build upon in order to succeed.
